Body-Weight Resistance Exercise Can Reduce BP In Middle-Aged Adults With Hypertension
As per a study published in ‘Clinical And Experimental Hypertension’, body-weight resistance exercise acutely brings down blood pressure in middle-aged adults diagnosed with hypertension, without any significant effects on glycemia responses. The trial had twenty-three participants and was conducted to evaluate the acute effects of single session of body-weight resistance (BWR) exercises on blood pressure (BP) and glycemia in middle-aged adults with hypertension.
The following were the key findings:
- Systolic BP decreased after BWR when compared with control at the 45-minute and 60-minute mark.
- Diastolic BP decreased after BWR at post 15-minute, 30-minute, 45-minute and 60-minute mark, when compared with control.
In conclusion, this study found that following BWR, there is an acute reduction in BP among middle-aged adults with hypertension without any significant effects on the glycemia response. The authors of this study suggest that this form of resistance training could improve access, adherence, and decrease the costs related to exercise programs.
