Lifestyle Interventions Reduce Need for Guideline-Directed Antihypertensive Medication
According to a recent study, individuals with mildly elevated blood pressure (BP) can lower their risk of cardiovascular diseases and decrease usage of antihypertensive medication with lifestyle changes.
The key results were as follows:
- The 10-year cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk fell from 5.7% to 4.4% in the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) plus behavioral weight management (WM) group
- No significant changes were observed in the usual care group without lifestyle interventions.
- The percentages of participants with indications for guideline-based antihypertensive drugs declined from 51% to 18% in the DASH+WM group and from 48% to 22% in the DASH group.
Thus, lifestyle interventions can lower the calculated risk of CVD in men and women with mild hypertension and decrease the number of individuals indicated for guideline-directed antihypertensive medication.
