Nutritional Approach Plays an Important Role in Treatment of Chronic Constipation

According to a recent study, nutritional approach has an important role in chronic constipation treatment in everyday clinical practice, as it is the cornerstone on which chronic constipation therapy should be built.

The key results were as follows:

  • Food has beneficial effects, not only due to the fiber content, but also due to the presence of polyphenols, sorbitol, etc.
  • Adult women should consume approximately 25 g of fiber daily, men approximately 38 g, and children 19-25 g daily, in the form of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes.
  • The consumption of at least eight glasses (1.5-2 L) of fluids daily facilitates the laxative effectiveness of fiber intake.
  • It is mandatory to follow a balanced diet with adequate intake of micro and macro nutrients and not to skip meals, especially breakfast.
  • An active life is necessary and defecatory stimulus must not be ignored.
